Inside Taj Lake Palace

Built in 1746 as Jag Niwas, a pleasure palace for Udaipur's royal family, the Taj Lake Palace occupies an entire island in the middle of Lake Pichola. The only way in is by boat — a short crossing from the City Palace jetty that instantly sets the property apart from anything reachable by road.

White marble courtyards, lotus ponds, and arched colonnades wrap around the building, with views in every direction onto the lake and the Aravalli hills beyond. The palace appeared as a Bond villain's lair in Octopussy, and its Lily Pond restaurant remains one of the most requested dinner reservations in Rajasthan.
