Headlines about free cancellation and faster refunds describe scheduled airlines. A charter is a different contract, so here is what to check before you pay.
In 2026 India's civil aviation regulator, the DGCA, changed several rules for airline passengers. A 29 April 2026 summary from Wego reports that from 26 March 2026 passengers can cancel or amend a booking made directly on an airline's website within 48 hours at no extra cost, provided departure is at least 7 days away on domestic flights or 15 days away on international ones. The same summary reports faster refunds: 7 working days for credit-card payments and 14 for travel-agent or portal bookings. We are not lawyers and we have not reviewed the circulars themselves, so check the DGCA's own documents for the exact wording.
Why this is not automatically true for charter
The rules as reported concern scheduled airline tickets sold to individual passengers. A private jet or helicopter charter is a contract for a whole aircraft with an operator, and its cancellation, refund and change terms are set out in that contract. We are not aware of any published rule that gives charter customers the same 48-hour free-cancellation window, so do not assume one applies.
What a charter quote should state
- The cancellation schedule: what percentage is refundable at what notice period, and whether any amount is non-refundable from the moment you pay.
- Who holds the money and how long a refund takes once approved.
- What happens if the operator cancels or substitutes the aircraft, including whether a comparable aircraft is guaranteed.
- How weather, airport closures and crew duty limits are handled, since these can cancel a flight for reasons nobody controls.
- Whether date changes are free, chargeable, or treated as a cancellation and a new booking.
Before you pay, ask the desk to put the cancellation and refund terms in the quote in writing. If a term is unclear, ask what it means in rupees for a cancellation seven days and 48 hours before departure.
Scheduled airlines and charter side by side
- Scheduled airline: sold per seat, with reported regulator-set minimum protections on refunds and a short free-cancellation window for direct bookings.
- Charter: sold per aircraft, with terms agreed in the contract, so the written terms matter more than any general rule.
Frequently asked questions
Does the DGCA 48-hour free cancellation rule apply to private jet charters?
It is reported to apply to scheduled airline tickets booked directly on the airline's website. A charter is a separate contract with an operator, and we are not aware of a published rule giving it the same window. Ask for the cancellation terms in writing before you pay.
How long does a private jet charter refund take in India?
It depends on the operator and the contract. The faster refund timelines reported in 2026 relate to airline tickets, not charters. Ask the desk for the refund timeline and who holds the payment before you confirm.
What should a charter cancellation policy include?
It should state the refundable percentage at each notice period, what happens if the operator cancels or changes the aircraft, how weather and airport closures are treated, and how long refunds take.
