Mumbai now has a second airport in operation. For charter passengers the useful question is not whether it is open, but whether your operator can handle your aircraft there on your dates.
Navi Mumbai International Airport (IATA: NMI) opened to commercial flights on 25 December 2025. According to a July 2026 summary from the travel site Wego, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air were operating there by April 2026, with about 46 domestic destinations by summer and a first international service, Air India Express to Abu Dhabi, due on 15 July 2026. The same source puts the first phase at around 20 million passengers a year. These are reported figures; check current schedules with the airlines.
What it changes for Mumbai charter
Mumbai's main airport (BOM) is one of the busiest single-runway airports in the world, so a second airport is genuinely relevant to anyone planning movements in and out of the city. For charter passengers the practical effect depends on where you are actually going.
- Travellers based in Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Raigad or the Pune expressway belt may save a long cross-city drive to BOM.
- Wellness and resort trips to Alibaug, Lonavala and the Raigad coast are closer to the new airport than to BOM by road.
- Wedding and corporate guests flying in on scheduled flights may now arrive at either airport, which affects where private transfers should meet them.
- Wherever you land, Wego reports roughly 30 to 45 minutes to south Mumbai over the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link in good traffic. Allow more at peak hours.
What we have not confirmed
Reports on the new airport describe scheduled passenger services. The sources we reviewed do not say whether private jets, turboprops or helicopters can routinely be handled there, what parking and ground-handling arrangements exist, or how slots are allocated to non-scheduled flights. We have not confirmed these ourselves, and we will not assume them on your behalf.
Questions to ask before routing a charter through NMI
- Has the operator flown this aircraft type into NMI before, and can they confirm ground handling for your dates in writing?
- What are the parking and slot arrangements for non-scheduled aircraft, and could they change at short notice?
- How long is the road transfer from NMI to your actual destination at the time you will travel, compared with BOM?
- If NMI is not workable on the day, what is the fallback airport and who pays for the change?
Tell the charter desk your exact destination in Mumbai, not just the city. The better airport is the one with the shortest, most reliable journey to where you are going, and for many trips that will still be BOM.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charter a private jet to Navi Mumbai International Airport?
It depends on whether the operator can handle your aircraft there on your dates. Published coverage describes scheduled services, and we have not confirmed routine charter handling at NMI. Ask the desk to confirm handling, parking and slots in writing before you accept a quote.
Is Navi Mumbai airport better than Mumbai airport for private flights?
Neither is better in general. NMI can be closer if you are going to Navi Mumbai, Panvel or the Raigad coast, while BOM is usually closer to south and central Mumbai. Compare the full door-to-door time for your trip and ask about the fallback.
